African design is often reduced to a surface: a print, a palette, a texture applied to something that was conceived somewhere else. We were not interested in that.
MUTI is African in the way it was made rather than the way it is decorated. It was built for a specific person, in a specific set of cities, living a specific kind of week. Johannesburg on a Tuesday, Cape Town on a Friday, a flight in between, a gym at 6am, a dinner at 8.
The restraint is deliberate. So is the confidence. The brand does not need to announce where it is from, because the people it was made for already know.
